2006 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championship Site

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The ACC Indoor Track & Field Championship got underway Thursday afternoon at the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech with the Hokie women taking the day one lead after the completion of the women's pentathlon competition. Virginia Tech finished the afternoon with 16 points followed by the University of Miami with eight. Florida State currently sits in third place with five points.

Virginia Tech's Gunild Kreb captured the women's pentathlon event finishing in the top five in all five events including a pair of first place finishes in the shot put (42-11.75, 13.10m) and 800m run (2:19.47). Kreb accumulated a personal best score of 4,009 points good for an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and tops in the ACC this season. Amy Seward of Miami placed second with 3,926 points en route to finishing first in the 60m hurdles (8.71) and long jump (20-06.50, 6.26m) competitions. Hokie senior Saskia Triesscheijn took third place totaling 3,827 points. Both scored registered by Seward and Triesscheijn met NCAA provisional qualifying standards. Virginia's Rachel Marks and NC State's Laila Thomas tied for first in the high jump portion of the pentathlon clearing 5-06.00 (1.68m).

After four events of the men's heptathlon, Clemson's Ryan Koontz leads the group with 3,120 points just three points ahead of teammate Brent Hobbs who sits in second with 3,117 points. Roland DaSilva of Miami is currently in third place with 2,902 points. Hobbs led all individuals with two event wins capturing the long jump (23-04.50, 7.12m) and shot put (44-06.25, 13.57m) competitions. DaSilva opened the heptathlon with a win in the 60m dash crossing the finish line in a time of 7.11, while Koontz claimed the final event of the afternoon in the high jump clearing the bar at 6-06.25 (1.99m) to hold a slim advantage on day one. The heptathlon will conclude on Friday with three more events, including the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run competitions.
 

 

Day two of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship will begin on Friday, February 24 at 12:00 pm with the men's heptathlon 60m hurdle event. For complete day two results, stayed tuned to www.theacc.com.
