CARY, N.C. - For just the sixth time in ACC Tournament history, the top four seeds will advance into the semifinals as the third-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels posted a 2-0 win over the sixth-seeded NC State Wolfpack in the final quarterfinal game of the 2004 ACC Men's Soccer Championship Wednesday night. In a defensive battle between both teams, the Tar Heels were able to break through with the game's first goal as Andrew Rhea netted the game-winner for his first goal of the season at the 72:26 mark in the second half.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half as North Carolina held the advantage in shots and corner kicks through the first 45 minutes. The Tar Heels registered six shots to NC State's one, while UNC was credited with a pair of corners (2-0). The Wolfpack's Jorge Gonzalez made three saves in goal.

North Carolina broke the scoreless tie in the 73rd minute as Rhea recorded his first goal of the season. The senior midfielder delivered a low shot inside the left post to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead. Blake Beach was awarded an assist on the play, his first of the season.

With just under ten minutes remaining in the game, the Tar Heels increased their lead to 2-0 as Jamie Watson found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Dax McCarty assisted on the play as his free kick was deflected right at Watson for the goal.

The win moves North Carolina to 10-7-2 on the season and into the semifinals where they will face the Maryland Terrapins on Friday, November 12 at 8:00 pm. With the loss, NC State falls to 8-8-2 on the year.
