CARY, N.C. - No. 1 seed Maryland scored in the 65th minute to break a 1-1 tie, and held on for a 2-1 win over eighth-seeded Wake Forest on Wednesday, advancing to the semifinal round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship.

Maryland's Jason Garey scored at the 64:37 mark, knocking home a close-range shot after a pair of passes from Graham Zusi and Stephen King. King got the play started with a pass to Zusi, and Zusi threaded a nice thru ball in the box to Garey, who ran onto the ball about eight yards out. Garey then put the ball home to the right side of the goal.

Garey nearly put the Terrapins (15-3-1) up 3-1 in the 71st minute, but his header from inside the box smacked off the crossbar and was cleared by the Demon Deacon defense.

Wake Forest (11-7-2) had a pair of excellent scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of the contest, but couldn't find the back of the net. In the 82nd minute, Steven Curfman's laser shot off a free kick just outside the box sailed just wide of the goal. The Demon Deacons had another great scoring chance thwarted in the 84th minute, when Ryan Solle's shot from inside the box was blocked by a sliding Terrapin defender.

Maryland drew first blood in the contest, with King converting a penalty kick in the 31st minute. After the Terrapins' Robbie Rogers collided with Wake Forest keeper Brian Edwards in the box, Maryland was awarded the penalty kick. King stepped up and drilled the ball home to the left side to break the scoreless tie.

The Demon Deacons would even the score just over nine minutes later, again on a penalty kick. Wake Forest's Jamie Franks was fouled in the Maryland box, and Curfman made good on the ensuing free chance with a rocket shot into the lower left corner to level the score in the 40th minute.

The stats for the game were fairly even, with Maryland holding a slim advantage in shots, 9-8. Maryland had seven corner kicks to the Deacons' four, while Maryland had 18 fouls to 16 for Wake Forest.

Maryland advances to the semifinals for the fourth straight year, and will face Duke, a 2-0 winner over Virginia Tech, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11.
