North Carolina Advances to ACC Men's Soccer Semis with 1-0 Win Over NC State Nov. 9, 2005 Boxscore CARY, N.C. - Sixth-seeded North Carolina scored in the 61st minute and held off a determined NC State squad on Wednesday, winning 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship at SAS Soccer Park. North Carolina's Ben Hunter broke a scoreless tie at the 60:44 mark, scoring off a direct free kick from 25 yards out. Dax McCarty was fouled outside the box, setting up the free kick, and Hunter deposited his shot into the lower left corner to put the Tar Heels on the board. Third-seeded NC State nearly pulled even in the 65th minute, when John Queeley's shot smacked off the crossbar. After a UNC foul just outside the box, the Wolfpack quickly set up for the free kick, and Queeley lofted a shot that just missed dropping in for the tying score. NC State (11-6-1) picked up its offensive intensity after the UNC score, and took three if its six shots in the game in the final 20 minutes. The North Carolina defense withstood the pressure, however, and managed to preserve the 1-0 Tar Heel lead. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, with North Carolina getting off five shots to the Wolfpack's two and four corner kicks to NC State's one. The Tar Heels (14-3-2) had several promising scoring chances in the first half, but came up empty every time. Michael Harrington sent a bullet into the box off a UNC corner kick, but his shot ricocheted off the crossbar. Seven minutes later, Hunter had his close-range shot sail just high. Later in the half, Stephen Brickford dribbled through several NC State defenders and ripped a shot from the top of the box, but Wolfpack keeper Jorge Gonzalez made a solid stop. Gonzalez made another brilliant stop on a UNC corner, when an NC State defender redirected the pass into the box, sending it toward his own goal.
NC State's Bryant Salter had both of the Wolfpack's shots in the first half, forcing UNC goalkeeper Justin Hughes to make a save in the 10th minute. The teams were meeting in the ACC Championship for the fifth time, and the fourth time in the last five seasons. North Carolina advances to the semifinals for the second straight season, and will face either No. 2 seed Virginia or No. 7 seed Clemson on Friday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m.
