No. 7 Seed Clemson Tops No. 2 Seed Virginia, 4-1, in ACC Men's Soccer Quarterfinal Action Nov. 9, 2005 Boxscore CARY, N.C. - Seventh-seeded Clemson exploded for four goals after halftime to knock off No. 2 Virginia in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Wednesday evening, 4-1. After a scoreless first half of play, both teams combined for four goals in a 10-minute span shortly after intermission. Clemson started the scoring bonanza at the 49:44 mark when Randy Albright converted a Justin Moore cross from close range to get the Tigers on the board. Ryan Roushandel put the Tigers up 2-0 just 1:16 later, pounding home a saved Mark Buchholz shot from just a few yards out. Buchholz picked up an assist on the play. Virginia wasted little time getting a goal back as Yannick Reyering scorched home a direct free kick from just outside the box in the 57th minute. Reyering scalded a shot past the wall that Clemson keeper Phil Marfuggi could not corral. The Tigers answered less than three minutes later, however, as Dane Richards dribbled through the box and put a shot away from six yards out to restore Clemson's two-goal lead in the 60th minute. Clemson (11-4-3) capped the scoring in the 69th minute, when Bryson Moore headed home a Richards cross for the final margin. The Tigers nearly added a fifth goal in the 71st minute, but Buchholz' shot past a drawn-out Ryan Burke was saved on the goal line by the Cavaliers' Ryan Poole. The second half was in stark contrast to the first, in which neither team could find the back of the net. Virginia had its best scoring chance in just the second minute, as Reyering put a diving header on goal that Marfuggi saved from point-blank range. Clemson also had its share of close calls on offense in the first period, but came away empty each time.
Burke made several outstanding saves in goal for Virginia (12-4-2) on the evening, twice turning Richards away one-on-one. Burke also had a diving stop late in the second half on a tough close-range shot. For the first time in the 19-year history of the ACC Championship, Virginia will not appear in the semifinal round. Clemson advances to the semifinals of the tournament, where it will face sixth-seeded North Carolina at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11. No. 1 Maryland and No. 5 Duke will meet in the first semifinal of the day, slated for 5:30 p.m. With Duke's victory over No. 4 Virginia Tech, North Carolina's victory over No. 3 NC State and Clemson's win over No. 2 Virginia, three lower-seeded teams advance to the semifinals for the first time in league history.
