No. 4 Maryland Tops Princeton In Season Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Knowing it would be foolish to try to run with No. 4 Maryland, Princeton attempted to put the brakes on the Terrapins' potent fast break.

"We were going to try to out-slow Maryland," coach Courtney Banghart said. "We felt like it would be Maryland on roller-blades and Princeton in sneakers."

The problem with the strategy was that the Tigers couldn't neutralize guard Kristi Toliver, who had 16 points and 10 assists to lead Maryland to a 76-62 victory Friday night in the Preseason WNIT.

"Kristi Toliver is tough," Banghart said. "Our game plan was to challenge her shots and hope she doesn't make them."

Toliver went 7-for-10 from the floor and accounted for more than half of Maryland's 19 assists.

Clemson Downs Maine, 72-59, in Season Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. - Freshman Whitney Hood scored 13 points in just 20 minutes in her first collegiate game, and sophomore Morganne Campbell scored 13 points and added seven rebounds and six steals in her first collegiate start to lead Clemson to a 72-59 women's basketball victory over Maine on Friday night at Clemson's Littlejohn Coliseum.

The victory avenged last year's 80-78 Maine victory in Orono when the Bears won on a last second shot. It was the season opener for both teams and the first time Clemson had won its season opener under Cristy McKinney.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action again on Sunday when they play host to Western Carolina. A victory would make Clemson 2-0 for the first time since 2003-04.

Campbell and Hood were supported by Sthefany Thomas with 11 points and Lele Hardy with 10. Hardy had a double-double and nearly reached a triple double with steals. The sophomore had 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals to go with four assists in a productive 29 minutes. Her steal total tied her career high and was one off the Clemson single game record.

Georgia Tech Topples Davidson, 69-50, in Opener

ATLANTA, Ga. - Chioma Nnamaka scored 18 points to lead Georgia Tech to a 69-50 victory over Davidson (0-1) on Friday night at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) held the Wildcats to only 21 points in the second half and forced 31 total turnovers en route to their season-opening victory. Tech took advantage of the Davidson miscues, scoring 32 points off turnovers.

Tech opened the second half with a 15-4 run sparked by a pair of baskets by Nnamaka to put the game away. The Jackets held Davidson to only four free throws until Alex Thompson hit a three-point field goal with 10:22 remaining in the game.

Junior Jacqua Williams scored 11 points and registered five steals and freshman Iasia Hemingway added seven points and a game-high seven boards for Tech. Senior Jill Ingram came off the bench to finish with six points, a game-high six steals and five assists.

Hurricanes Roll Past FAU In Opener, 64-45

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Senior guard Maurita Reid scored 21 points and a 24-2 first-half run helped the University of Miami women's basketball team defeat Florida Atlantic, 64-45, Friday afternoon at the BankUnited Center in the season opener for both teams.

Junior guard LaToya Cunningham added 16 points and sophomore forward Charmaine Clark chipped in 14 points for the Hurricanes (1-0), who shot 36.9 percent. Reid knocked down five three-pointers and fell one rebound shy of a double-double. Cunningham also led the team with nine assists and nailed four three-pointers as Miami finished 10-of-27 from long range. Jaime Givens and Breana Cox each had nine points for FAU (0-1).

After FAU got out to an early 11-6 lead. UM broke out of an early shooting slump to go up 30-13 before a Hannah Jones free throw ended the UM run with 1:32 to play in the first half. The Hurricanes, after hitting just three of their first 16 shots, drained 10 of their next 18 attempts to head into the half with a 35-16 lead.

Boston College Opens Season with a 68-36 Victory over Wright State

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's basketball team opened the season with a 68-36 victory over non-conference foe Wright State at Conte Forum. The Eagles are now 1-0, while Wright State is 0-1.

The Eagles were led by freshman center Carolyn Swords with 23 points and six rebounds, while junior Corey Rusin added 10 points, two assists and two steals. Sophomore Ayla Brown had eight points and eight rebounds and freshman point guard Jaclyn Thoman had five points, three steals and eight assists.

Wright State was led by Kanisha Ward with 14 points and five rebounds, while Sheylani Peddy added eight points, four steals and five assists.

FSU Women's Basketball Opens Season With 93-53 Win Over Florida Gulf Coast

FT MYERS, Fla. - On a historic night for Florida Gulf Coast University, it was the Florida State women's basketball team that was doing the celebrating. The Seminoles put a damper on the Eagles' Division I debut as they routed the hosts 93-53 on Friday (November 9) at Alico Arena.

Florida State won its 14th season opener in a row as it started the year at 1-0. Florida Gulf Coast drops to 0-1 to start its first season at the Division I level. The Eagles were the Division II runner-up last season.

The 93 points matches the Seminoles' total in last year's season opener against UAB. It's the second-largest opening-game victory - trailing a 107-28 win over Savannah State on November 23, 2003. In addition, it's the Seminoles' widest margin of victory since an 84-34 thumping of Fordham last season.

No. 8 North Carolina Routs N.C. Central 109-32

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Rashanda McCants knew coming into this season that No. 8 North Carolina would need more offense from her.

For one game at least, she delivered.

McCants scored a career-high 17 points and the Tar Heels set a school record for largest margin of victory by beating North Carolina Central 109-32 on Friday night.

"I was thinking about how other games are going to be and how I'm going to have to attack more for me to be better," McCants said. "That's definitely on my mind."

Freshman Cetera DeGraffenreid added 16 points for the Tar Heels, who opened with 15 straight points against the Eagles, who were making their Division I debut.
