Duke Women's Golf Falls Back To Second At NCAA Regionals Through 36 Holes

ATHENS, GA.-- On a day when the putts wouldn't drop, the top-ranked and top-seeded Duke women's golf team turned in a second round total of 303 and fell back to second place entering the final round of the NCAA East Regional, which is being played at the 6,335-Yard, Par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.

After carding a three-under-par ledger of 285 on Thursday, Duke posted a 15-over-par, 303, on day two. The Blue Devils own a 36-hole total of 588 and trail Florida (585) by three strokes with 18 holes remaining. The Gators totaled a team-best seven-over-par, 295, on Friday. Both Duke and Florida opened the day on the 10th hole in the second round.

Rounding out the top eight teams were South Carolina (594), Auburn (598), Georgia (599), Furman (599), Wake Forest (603) and New Mexico (605). The top eight teams through Saturday's round will advance to participate in the NCAA Championship from May 20-23 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Continuing to lead the Blue Devils is the top-ranked golfer in the nation, Amanda Blumenherst, who carded a one-over-par, 73. She enters the final day tied for second along with Louisville's Sara-Maude Juneau with a 36-hole total of 141 and three strokes off the individual lead. Maintaining the individual lead is South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin, who fired a two-under-par, 70, in the second round and owns a two-day ledger of 138. Both Toumpsin and Blumenherst will be paired together in the final round on Saturday.

Deacs Rise to Seventh Heading into Final Round in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 14 Wake Forest women's golf team moved up one spot into seventh place following a 17-over 305 in the second round of the NCAA East Regional in Athens, Ga.
 

 

Wake was led by Allie Bodemann's three-over 75 Friday. Bodemann entered the second round tied for tied for 77th place but jumped 21 spots to land in a tie for 56th.

Bodemann recorded two birdies on the day.

Nannette Hill turned in the second best performance for the Deacs for the second straight day. The junior carded a four-over 76 and is currently tied for 18th.

Cavalier Golfers Enter Final Round of East Regional in Ninth Place

Athens, GA - The Virginia women's golf team enters Sunday's final round of play at the NCAA East Regional Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course with a solid chance of advancing to the NCAA Championships. The top eight teams in the field of 21 will move on to the national tournament. Following Friday's second round, the Cavaliers are ninth overall at 606, including a second-round score of 310. New Mexico is just one shot ahead of UVa in eighth place and Wake Forest is three shots better in seventh place at 603.

The scores were much higher for the field during the second round. After nine teams shot better than 300 in Thursday's opening round, just one team managed that Friday.

Virginia freshman Joy Kim leads the Cavaliers in 18th place at 150. She shot 5-over 77 in the second round. Whitney Neuhauser is one shot behind her in 25th place while Calle Nielson is 33rd at 152. Neuhauser shot 79 Friday while Nielson carded a 78. Lene Krog turned in the team's best second-round score at 4-over 76 and stands 49th at 154. Jennie Arseneault dropped back to 71st at 157, including an 80 in the second round.


NCAA Central Regional, University of Texas Golf Course, Austin, Texas

NC State Has A Chance to Make First NCAA Championship

AUSTIN, Texas - Lauren Doughtie and Stephanie Derrey are both in the top-10 and NC State is in a tie for 10th place after the second round at the 2008 NCAA Women's Central Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club.

The Wolfpack has positioned themselves for a realistic chance of making the programs first NCAA Championship appearance after firing a team score of +16 (304) during Friday's round and has compiled a two-day total of +28 (300-304=604).

NC State will head into Sunday's final round only four shots out of eighth place. The top eight clubs advance to the NCAA Championship.

One old adage in golf is to post a score, get in the clubhouse and see how a particular day will play out. That was exactly what NC State did on Friday. Playing bright and early at 8 am from No. 10 tee, the Wolfpack was one of the first clubs to finish up.

Florida State Women's Golf Team In 12th Place At NCAA Women's Central Regional Championship

AUSTIN, Texas - The Florida State University women's golf team is in 12th place after two rounds of the NCAA Central Regional Championship at the University of Texas Golf Course. The Seminoles fell from seventh place after the first round to 12th place after the second round. The Seminoles need to move back into the top eight in the team standings to advance to the NCAA Championship May 20-24 at the University of New Mexico. The Seminoles will begin play in Saturday's third and final round of the event only five strokes behind Nebraska who is currently the eighth place in the team standings.

Florida State is in 12th place and needs to move ahead of at least four teams currently in front of the Seminoles to advance. The Seminole are one stroke behind NC State and Kent State, two strokes behind LSU and five strokes behind Nebraska. The Seminoles are only nine strokes behind fifth placed Texas.

Seminole All-American Caroline Westrup is in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings after shooting a one-over par 73 in the second round. She has a two-day total of 143. For Westrup to advance as an individual for the second consecutive year she must be one of the top two ranking individual golfers not on one of the eight qualifying teams. Westrup is currently fourth among the potential individual qualifiers and is only two strokes behind each of those three players.


NCAA West Regional, Lincoln Hills Golf Club, Lincoln, Calif.

Carolina Golfers 18th At NCAA West Regional

The University of North Carolina women's golf team slipped to 18th place after the second round of the NCAA West Regional. Carolina carded a 23-over-par 311 on Friday for a 608 total at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. Southern California leads the 21-team field with a five-under-par 571 total after posting an even par 288.

Carolina junior Sydney Crane was the low Tar Heel in the second round. The Jamestown, N.C. native fired a two-over-par 74 for a four-over 148 total and is tied for 27th place. Sophomore Kate Thomas and junior Lauren Hunt both shot a five-over 77 in the second round. Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, has a 147 total and is tied for 21st place while Hunt, from Little River, S.C., stands at 153 in a tie for 68th place. Senior Ann Laney posted an 83 for a 160 total and is tied for 95th and senior Colette Lowe carded an 84 for a 173 total and is tied for 102nd place.
