CARY, N.C. -- The Virginia Cavaliers scored four goals in each half to down the Virginia Tech Hokies in the first quarterfinal match-up of the 2004 ACC Women's Soccer Championship. Virginia's Kristen Weiss tallied seven points on two goals and three assists en route to tying a pair of tournament records for assists and points in a single-game.

Virginia got on the board first as Kelly Hammond netted her seventh goal of the season. The Cavaliers' Kristen Weiss setup the goal when she sent a cross from the right side which was deflected by Virginia Tech goalkeeper Mallory Soldner. The ball fell right to Hammond, who headed the loose ball giving the Cavaliers an early 1-0 lead.

The Cavaliers struck again in the 13th minute as Lindsay Gusick scored to give Virginia a two goal advantage. Weiss assisted on the play, her second of the match.

Virginia would counter with its third goal of the first half when Gusick and Weiss hooked up again. This time Gusick found Weiss in the 29th minute for her third goal of the season.

The Cavaliers would tie a season-high for goals in the first half when Hammond tallied her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Sarah Huffman in the 38th minute.

Virginia increased its lead to 5-0 in the 66th minute when Sarah Curtis was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Freshman Nikki Giunta took the kick and found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Gusick tallied her second goal of the afternoon and 14th of the season at the 73:24 mark in the second half. Giunta was in on the scoring as she was credited with her first-ever collegiate assist.

In the 79th minute, Weiss struck again as Hammond found the junior forward streaking down the right side of the field. Weiss hooked a shot into the left side of the net for her second goal of the afternoon.

Less than three minutes later, Virginia would score again as Weiss found Curtis for her fourth goal of the season and an 8-0 Cavalier lead.

The win moves Virginia to 15-2-1 on the season and into the semifinals where they will face the winner of the Florida State/Clemson match-up on Friday, November 5 at 5:00 pm. With the loss, Virginia Tech falls to 11-8-0 on the season.
