![]() North Carolina Downs Virginia 4-1 To Claim 2005 ACC Women's Soccer Championship
Nov. 6, 2005 Boxscore CARY, N.C. - North Carolina won its 16th ACC Women's Soccer Championship crown after downing Virginia 4-1 Sunday afternoon at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Elizabeth Guess scored a pair of goals and Lindsay Tarpley notched the game-winner in the 27th minute to lead the Tar Heels to victory. Senior Kacey White was named Tournament MVP after tallying six points on a goal and four assists on the week. The Tar Heels struck first in the 14th minute of action as Guess registered her 10th tally of the season off an assist from Kendall Fletcher. Fletcher initiated the scoring play off a free kick where Guess headed the ball into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead. North Carolina would then score its second goal of the half off their first corner kick of the game at 26:35. Tarpley was credited with the goal as she headed in the corner offering from freshman Yael Averbuch. The goal was Tarpley's third of the tournament and sixth career tally in ACC Tournament history tying her for sixth all-time. Virginia would get on the board right before the half as Noelle Keselica notched her ninth goal of the season. Jess Rostedt was given an assist on the play as her kick deflected off the Tar Heel defense and right to Keselica who fired a shot from 15 yards out to cut the North Carolina lead to 2-1. The Tar Heels would regain their two-goal advantage in the 57th minute as Guess would tally her second goal of the afternoon and 11th of the season. White assisted on the play firing a long pass from the left side where Guess one-timed the shot for the score. North Carolina would score for the final time on the afternoon in the 71st minute has Heather O'Reilly registered her team-leading 16th goal of the season beating the Cavalier keeper one-on-one to the goal. Tarpley and Lori Chalupny were each credited with an assist on the play.
The victory moves North Carolina to 20-1-0 on the season, while Virginia falls to 15-5-1. The Tar Heels will receive the ACC's automatic bid into the 2005 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship as a result of their victory Sunday afternoon. The women's field of 64 for the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship will be announced on Monday, November 7 between 5 and 5:30 on ESPNews.
