COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Behind a solid pitching performance by Virginia's Coty Tolar and a two-run home run by senior catcher Jenn Wynn, the third-seeded Cavaliers advanced in the winner's bracket of the 2005 ACC Softball Championship with a 2-1 win over seventh-seeded Virginia Tech.

Virginia's Tolar and Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher cruised through the first three innings allowing just one hit apiece. But it was a two-run shot over the left field fence by Wynn in the top of the fourth which gave Virginia the early 2-0 lead. Elea Crockett started the inning sending the first pitch from Tincher to the gap in left center for a stand-up double. Two batters later Wynn sent a 1-1 offering over the fence in left for her ninth home run of the season.

The Hokies would threaten in the bottom half of the inning as catcher Megan Evans reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third after back-to-back wild pitches by Tolar. Stephanie Savre drew a two-out walk. Virginia right fielder Jessica Taylor ended the inning as she made a back pedaling catch in front of the warning track on Sarah Prosise's deep fly to right.

Virginia Tech got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as pinch hitter Kelsey Hoffman hit an RBI double to left center scoring Caroline Stolle from first. Tolar then induced a pair of groundouts to third to end the inning, keeping the Cavaliers out in front 2-1.

Tolar fired a complete game for the Cavaliers allowing one run on four hits while striking out four to earn the victory. For the Hokies, Tincher went seven innings giving up two runs on four hits while striking out nine. For the tournament, Tincher has accumulated 30 strikeouts in two games setting the individual tournament record for strikeouts previously held by Jessica Sallinger in 2002, when she fanned 29 batters.

Virginia will next face Georgia Tech on Saturday, May 14, 2005 at 12:00 pm, while Virginia Tech will square-off against North Carolina later today at 5:00 pm.
